Rural healthcare poor as doctors don't go there
Advisor Anwarul Iqbal opens hospital at Sylhet village
Advisor for LGRD and Co-operatives Anwarul Iqbal yesterday said mindset of physicians is a great hurdle to improving healthcare services in rural areas as they do not want to go there.
Most of the doctors prefer to stay in cities and towns and go to upazilas just to take salaries.
Even on repeated instructions, many doctors did not join the rehabilitation work in Sidr-hit costal areas. For this, 46 government doctors were suspended, he said while inaugurating a Tk 2 core 31-bed hospital at Ranaping village in Golapganj upazila, set up by Sylhet-born American scientist Dr MA Rahman, working with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
He said none of the 14,000 community clinics, built with World Bank assistance could not be started in years.
Former chief of UK Awami League, Ataur Rahman Khan, younger brother of scientist Dr. MA Rahman, chaired the inaugural function. Acting mayor of Sylhet City Corporation Azam Khan, DIG of police Abdus Salam Khan and acting Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet ATM Mamunur Rashid also spoke.
The advisor said, the urban primary health care project, which is on in six cities and five pourashava areas, would be extended to all pourashavas in phases. The process will be starred this year, he said.
Chairman of the hospital committee, Ataur Rahman Khan, said the 31-bed hospital on a 2-storied structure will be turned into a 100-bed one soon after constructing three more stories.
Earlier, the advisor visited the incomplete building of Sylhet Press Club, being built with government fund.
