Acid victim's family threatened for case withdrawal
Family members of an acid victim madrasa student is now being threatened with death by the perpetrators, the victims alleged at a press conference in the town yesterday.
Thirteen year-old Sharmin, a student of class nine at Shoula Girls Dakhil Madrasha in Patuakhali Sadar upazila, sustained serious aid-burn injuries on July 5, 2005.
Her mother Sarupjan filed a case with Sadar police station next day, accusing seven people including Mehedi Hasan Feroz, a local youth. Feroz, the prime accused, got bail from court.
“They are now threatening me, my husband Deraj Howlader and our daughter with death to withdraw the case”, Sarupjan alleged at the press conference held at Patuakhali office of Bangladesh Legal Services Trust (Blast).
She also submitted a complaint with Blast seeking legal support.
Police submitted charge sheet of the case to court on January 5 last year, six months after the incident.
Sharmin was treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for about three months for her serious burn injuries on upper part f her body. After treatment, Mohila Ainjibi Samitee kept her at its shelter in Dhaka. She returned home last week.
Delivery of verdict in the case is being delayed as Asfak Uzzaman, Investigation Officer (IO) of the case and the then SI (Sub Inspector) of Sadar police station, is yet to give his statement as he was transferred. The trial court has recorded evidences of all other witnesses except him, court sources said.
