Arrest warrant against ex-BNP MP Ilyas Ali in extortion case

A court in Sylhet yesterday issued arrest warrant against former lawmaker and Sylhet district BNP chief M Ilyas Ali in an extortion case, filed by a female Union Parishad (UP) member in his constituency. Chief Judicial Magistrate in Sylhet Md. Rafiqul Alam issued the order as Ali has been absconding for about a year since filing of the case. The court also cancelled the bail of 3 others accused in the case. They are Ali's close aides Khajanchi UP Chairman Rajab Ali, BNP activists Abul Boshor of Telikona village and Faizur Rahman of Amorgaon of Biswanath upazila. Earlier, on March 31, Sub Inspector Nur Mohammad Sikder of Sylhet Kotwali police station filed charge sheet in the case with the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court. Ilyas and the other accused were shown absconding in the charge sheet. Two days ahead of submission of the charge sheet, the three other accused got interim bail from High Court. As the accused appeared before the Sylhet court yesterday and prayed for making their bail permanent, the court rejected their prayer and ordered sending them to custody. Name of an engineer of Local Government and Engineering Department LGED, accused in the case, was dropped from the charge sheet. UP member Angura Begum, filed the case on May 11 last year for allegedly demanding Tk 4 lakh as toll. In the case, she alleged that Ilyas Ali and UP Chairman Rajab Ali along with three others demanded the money and they realised Tk 50,000 of it. They also forcibly took her signatures on four blank non-judicial stamps, the complainant alleged. Angura alleged that Rajab Ali and LGED engineer Habibur Rahman had misappropriated Tk 10 lakh in the name of compensation to a man (who had died long ago) by producing fake documents of a plot for construction of a UP building. As Angura protested it, the then lawmaker called her to his house in Sylhet city and abused her. She was compelled to give them Tk 50,000, she claimed. As the lawmaker and the chairman belonged to the then ruling party, she could not lodge any complaint, Angura claimed. Sub Inspector Rabiul Hasan of Sylhet Kotwali police station investigated the case first. It was handed over to SI Nur Mohammad as Rabiul went abroad. Eleven persons were made witnesses in the case.
