Police rescue 3 gas field officials after 23hrs
Police rescued three officials of the fractionation plant at Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL) yesterday evening after 23 hours of their confinement at their offices by workers to press their demands for job regularization.
RPGCL is a concern of Petrobangla in Golapganj.
A police official of Gopalganj police station told the Daily Star that there was however no untoward incident.
A meeting involving RPGCL officials, Gopalganj pourashava chairman and police officials has been scheduled to begin at 9 pm Wednesday, officials in Sylhet said.
Over a year ago, about 100 workers were absorbed as master roll employees in the LPG fractionation plant of RPGCL. They were assured on several occasions that their jobs would be made permanent, but nothing was done.
Rather, the authorities hired some new people from other districts in past few months, the agitated workers alleged.
Weeks ago, the authorities in presence of local Pourashava chairman and others assured of providing job to 20 in the first phase. Accordingly, they went to join on Tuesday. But, the authorities asked them to quit office. This angered the workers and they pressed on the officials for returning their applications, taken 7 months ago as well as to clear their arrears.
The workers wearing pieces of white cloth on their heads sat at the main gate of the plant Tuesday evening as a 3-hour meeting with officials ended without any result. RPGCL's GM Aziz Ahmed, Factionation Plant in-charge Nur Ullah and Deputy Manager Ilyasur Rahman somehow attempted to leave the plant at about 10 pm in an official vehicle, but failed as the workers stopped them.
They asked the officials to remain inside.
Plant in-charge Nurullah yesterday admitted that they were kept confined by agitated workers.
