Remove corrupt persons from public universities

One hundred and fifty-five teachers of Rajshahi University in a statement yesterday urged the caretaker government to remove all corrupt and politically appointed persons from important administrative positions in Rajshahi University and all other public universities.
The teachers also demanded investigation into alleged corruption and irregularities done by the politically appointed persons.
The caretaker government took many good initiatives in the judiciary, administration and in many institutions. But it is silent on corruption and irregularities done by few 'powerful' officials in public universities appointed earlier on political consideration.
“Its role as regards public universities is being questioned now by different quarters”, the statement said.
Every body knows that the immediate past BNP government appointed its men in key positions in public universities to keep those under control. The present caretaker government is silent about the political appointees, they said.
“Earlier, we published a white paper on RU administration's corruption, irregularities and politicisation”, the statement said.
“On several occasions earlier, we informed the chief adviser of the caretaker government and the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) about corruption, irregularities and politicisation at RU, showing documents. We also met the University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman but no action was taken”, the statement said.
“We think, this government will take action against corrupt RU officials to maintain its neutrality”, it added.
In the statement, the teachers said removal of corrupt persons is essential to establish a congenital academic atmosphere in public universities.
Signatories to the statement included Progressive Teachers Society convener Prof Abdus Sobhan, former RU Vice Chancellor Prof Saidur Kahman Khan, Prof Mizan Uddin, Prof Anando Kumar Saha, Prof Abul Kashem, Prof Mahabubur Rahman, Prof Fayekuzzaman, Prof Muklesur Rahman, Prof Julfiker Matin, Prof Anik Mahmud, Prof Jalal Uddin, Prof SM Abu Bakkar, Prof Shafiqunnabi Samadi, Prof Jannatul Ferdous, Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar Tapu, Prof Entajul Haque, Prof Muhammad Nurullah, Prof Sayen Uddin, Prof Shamsuddin Ilas, Tarek Noor, Rabiul Islam, Hasibul Alam and Ruhul Amian.
When contacted RU Vice-Chancellor Prof Altaf Hossain, said, “I don't know about the matter. I will not say anything without seeing the statement”.
