Reception given to indigenous freedom fighters in Tangail
Speakers demand trial of war criminals to establish rule of law
Indigenous freedom fighters were accorded a reception in Tangail yesterday with a call for trial of war criminals to uphold the spirit of the Liberation War and establish rule of law in the country.
One hundred and fifty freedom fighters from different indigenous communities in the country received honour at the function organised by Bangladesh Adivasi Adhikar Andolon. The function was held at the Shilpokala Academy auditorium in the town.
Former army chief and convener of Sector Commanders Forum Lt. Gen. (retd) Harun-or-Rashid Bir Protik and freedom fighter and former ambassador Maj. Gen (retd) Amin Ahmed Chowdhury Bir Bikram addressed the reception.
Language Movement veteran and indigenous (Rakhain) freedom fighter U Suea of Patuakhali inaugurated the function at 10am.
With Language Movement veteran and director of Kumudini Welfare Trust Protibha Mutsuddi in the chair, former adviser of caretaker government and former vice- chancellor of Jahangirnagar University Prof Dr Jillur Rahman Siddiqui and indigenous freedom fighter and former lawmaker Promod Mankin attended at the inaugural session.
Among others, indigenous freedom fighter from Chittagonj Hill Ttracts Ron Bikram Tripura and Oxfam programme coordinator Bivah Chakroborti also spoke at the function.
Jannatul Ferdousi, director of RDC, presented the keynote paper while general secretary of Adivasi Adhikar Andolon Prof Mezbah Kamal also spoke.
Freedom fighters from different indigenous communities narrated their stories of war in the second session.
Later, Bangalee freedom fighters honored the indigenous freedom fighters by presenting crests.
President of Bangladesh Adivasi Adhikar Andolon Dr HKS Arefin presided over the second session.
After the reception, indigenous artistes presented a colorful cultural show.
