A section of students of Rajshahi University yesterday held a rally and formed a human chain in front of the Central Library demanding immediate implementation of the National Women Development Policy (NWDP) and protesting the April 11 demonstrations by fundamentalists in Dhaka opposing the government move. At the rally, the students also criticised the government's role of a silent spectator while the fundamentalists staged protests defying the state of emergency. At least 200 people including journalists were injured during the April 11 demonstrations. Speakers at yesterday's rally urged the people to raise their voice against fundamentalists' activities against women's rights. They appreciated the move by the caretaker government to ensure equal rights of women. Fundamentalists do not oppose crimes in the society but came on the streets when the caretaker government took a move to ensure women's rights, they said. Fundamentalists are misleading people in the name of religion, speakers at the rally said and urged the government to take action against those who violated emergency.
