'Save Jamuna from encroachers'
Speakers at a view-exchange meeting here yesterday demanded demolition of all illegal encroachments on the banks of Jamuna river in Satkhira to restore its normal flow.
They also demanded cancellation of lease of the river for fish farming.
The meeting was jointly organised by Jamuna Bachao Andolon, Satkhira' and some local NGOs.
Principal Ashek e Elahi, president of the Jamuna Bachao Andolon, was in the chair.
It was addressed by local Union Parishad leaders, NGO officials, and representatives of the elite.
Once a lifeline, the Jamuna is now a sorrow for over 2, 00,000 people of Shyamnagar and its adjoining areas, they said.
No government took any step to free the river from the illegal encroachment though the people made demands on numerous occasions since 2004, they said.
Jamuna Bachao Andolon, a committee comprising representatives of all classes of people, was formed recently to save the river from encroachers.
