Staff Correspondent, Khulna
Acting mayor Moniruzzaman Moni has formed a three-member committee to thoroughly probe the cause of big cracks that have developed in the new Nagar Bhaban constructed at a cost of Tk 7 crore. The committee has been asked to submit report by next Tuesday. Headed by the head of civil engineering department of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) Prof MA Bashar, two other members of the committee are Chief Executive Officer Tapan Kumar Ghosh and acting Chief Engineer Nazmul Islam of Khulna City Corporation. Several cracks have developed in the newly constructed five-storied building of Khulna city corporation. The construction works were inaugurated by city mayor Sheikh Tayebur Rahman on May 2 in 2003. Messers Jabbed Ali Traders, a construction firm of Kushtia won the tender bid but Sheikh Nazrul Islam, an influential contractor loyal to the city mayor, allegedly forced Jabed Ali Traders to sell the tender and stay away. Design of the building was drawn up without testing soil of the site, said Prof Shamim Mahbubul Huq, head of urban planning department of Khulna University. When asked, Sheikh Nazrul Islam said he had looked after construction works in favour of his intimate friend -- contractor Jabed Ali of Kushtia.
