Kaliganj massacre day observed
People of Nilphamari yesterday observed Kaliganj massacre day, showing respect to about 300 innocent people massacred by Pakistani occupation army at Kaliganj village in Jaldhaka upazila in the district.
People from all walks of life gathered on the premises of the memorial built at the killing spot in the morning and placed floral wreaths at the altar.
Chadmoni, a social organization, and Kaliganj Shaheed Smrity High School jointly brought out a mourning procession to show respect to the martyrs.
Later a discussion meeting was held on the memorial premises. Osman Gani, a responsible person elite of the area, presided over the meeting while Joldhaka Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahidul Islam Bhuiyan attended, among others.
On 27 April in 1971, about 1,500 people including women, children and elderly from Kathali, Balagram, Golna, Joldhaka and adjoining villages were walking towards Ambari border in Domar upazila to save themselves from the Pakistani army.
When they reached Kaliganj village, nine kilometers northwest of Joldhaka upazila headquarters, a convoy of Pakistani army stopped and shot 300 of them.
