Country needs people like Mokbul Hossain
Iftekhar says in Sylhet
Foreign Affairs Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury has said the society now needs people like Mokbul Hossain Chowdhury, a luminous figure in the field of journalism and politics in the then Assam-Bengal region.
He dedicated his life for the cause of common men, Iftekhar said in his speech as chief guest at the publication ceremony of the book titled Kaler Dorponey Sangbadik-Rajnitibid Mokbul Hossain Chowdhury at the auditorium of Sylhet Chamber on Thursday night.
The book, a collection of writings on the late Language Movement veteran, was published on the occasion of his 50th death anniversary.
Born in 1898 at remote Binnakuli village in Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj district, Mokbul joined the Khilafat movement in 1920 and as a representative from the then greater Sylhet joined All India Congress and Khilafat Conference at Nagpur in 1920. He came in touch with great political leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Moulana Mohammad Ali, Moulana Shawkat Ali, CR Dass, Moulana Hossain Ahmed Madani, Moulana Abul Kalam Azad, Ismail Hossain Siraji and others. He died in 1957.
Journalist and freedom fighter Saleh Chowdhury, who edited the publication, chaired the function while Prof Abdul Aziz, Sylhet Chamber President Zunnun Mahmud Khan, Metropolitan University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Kabir Chowdhury, Principal Ataur Rahman Pir, writers Syed Mostafa Kamal and Abdul Hamid Manik, poet Ragib Hossain Chowdhury and Mokbul Hossain Chowdhury's son writer and lawyer Hossain Toufiq Chowdhury spoke on the occasion, among others. Mokbul's another son Hasan Shahriar is chief of Commonwealth Journalists Association.
