'Charge against Ariful, wife based on documents'
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) case against detained Sylhet city BNP chief Ariful Haque Chowdhury and his wife Shama Haque Chowdhury was filed after investigation found that they possessed assets and property beyond their known sources of income. This was stated by ACC Deputy Director Md. Nasir Uddin in his deposition before the court of District and Sessions Judge Md. Abdul Gafur yesterday. Deposition in the ACC case against Ariful and his wife began in the court on Sunday. Md. Nasir Uddin, DD of ACC's Sylhet regional office, is also the complainant of the case. The court on April 22 framed charges in the case. Ariful was a close aide to former finance minister and BNP stalwart M Saifur Rahman. There are 27 witnesses including the complainant in the case, court sources said. The ACC DD told the court that specific charges based on documents were made against the accused for accumulating property illegally. The ACC filed charge sheet against Ariful and his wife Shama for accumulating wealth worth over Tk 2.5 crore through corruption. ACC Assistant Director in Comilla regional office Shahin Ara Momtaj filed charge sheet in the case with the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Sylhet on March 3. Ariful also faces another case for hiding wealth worth about Tk 1.5 crore in his statement submitted to ACC earlier, sources said. Ariful was on the first list of corruption suspects, announced by the ACC. Absconding for weeks after the 1/11, Arif surrendered at joint forces camp at Sylhet Stadium on February 25 last year. Soon after, several extortion cases were filed against him. Ariful is also a ward commissioner of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC). He was also chief of the development sub-committee of SCC.
