Southkhali Sidr victims yet to be rehabilitated
Over 30,000 people of 6,500 families of Southkhali who were worst-hit by cyclonic storm Sidr on November 15 last year are yet to be rehabilitated despite assurance from government.
They are the people who lost their homes and still passing their days in sub-human condition in makeshift tents, said Southkhali Union Parishad (UP) chairman Anowar Hossain Panchayet.
He was addressing a press conference at Sharankhola Press Club recently alleging government's non-cooperation in rehabilitation of the Sidr victims of his union.
The UP chairman alleged that the rehabilitation work was stalled in Southkhali following an assurance from the Indian government who assured financial assistance for reconstruction of all Sidr-affected houses of 10 villages in the union, he said.
The chairman further said that there had been a proposal from the government that 4,000 houses would be reconstructed each at a cost of Tk 1,42,000 from fund donated by Saudi Arabia. But later the proposal was changed for construction of each house at a cost of Tk 61,498 only.
