Man to die for killing wife in Jhenidah
A special tribunal here yesterday awarded death sentence to a man for killing his wife for dowry.
The convict is Asalat Hossain of Gopinathpur village under Jhenidah Sadar upazila.
Jhenidah Women and Children Repression Prevention Special Tribunal Judge pronounced the verdict yesterday noon at a crowded courtroom.
The judge ordered Asalat Hossain to be hanged to death.
Prosecution story, in brief, is that Asalat Hossain married to Morium Begum, daughter of Khater Ali of Shankorpur village in Sadar upazila.
After marriage, Asalat who had his first wife named Ahrannessa started torturing Morium for dowry amounting to Tk one lakh.
On information, Morium's mother Shakera Khatun came to Asalat's house along with another of her son-in-law to settle the issue on February 13, 2006. But Asalat picked up a quarrel with his mother-in-law for dowry. At this stage, Morium intervened. But Asalat and his first wife Ahrannessa started beating Morium. Hearing her cry, locals rushed to the spot and settled the matter.
But the next day Asalat and Ahrannessa again began to beat Morium till her death. Later, both of them left the scene at night hanging the body with a mango tree at a garden owned by Amulia Biswas at the same village.
Morium's mother Shakera Begum filed a case with Jhenidah sadar police station. After investigation, the charge-sheet was submitted to the court accusing Asalat Hossain and his first wife Ahrannessa. But the court acquitted Ahrannessa of her charges.
The judge handed down the verdict after examining 21 evidences.
Special public prosecutor (PP) Md Abu Taleb conducted the case on behalf of the state while Advocate Ashraful Alam Joarder fought the legal battle for the accused.
