Charge framing against mayor Kamran deferred again
A court in Sylhet yesterday deferred charge framing against detained Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran in a case for possessing foreign liqour in his house. The Additional District and Sessions Judge-Md Amir Uddin deferred it till July 21.
The High court had stayed the case for three months till 20 July.
Earlier on 16 April it was deferred till yesterday (May 7) as the defence lawyers informed about a stay order for 3 months from the High court. But, they did not submit any order on 16 April and it was refixed for yesterday. Previously, the court also had deferred it till 16 April, as the defence lawyers prayed for.
Kamran was brought to the Sylhet from the Comilla Central Jail and was put before the judge yesterday.
The case filed against the SCC mayor under the Narcotics Act and Anti-smuggling Act was shifted to the Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court in Sylhet on February 25.
Mayor Kamran was arrested in the much talked Kitchen market graft case on the first week of April last year. He was released on interim bail given by the high court after a month. Kamran was caught for the second time after 4 weeks from the city's Gulshan Hotel in the midnight of 28 May last year. Within hours of his arrest, the joint forces men recovered one bottle of foreign liqour, some documents of bank accounts, FDR worth Taka 35 lakh and others from his house at the city's Chharar Par area. Kotwali PS started a case against the mayor under Narcotics law. Another case was started against him under the Emergency power rules.
