Sust authorities again suspend English honours exams
The authorities of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) in a dramatic move yesterday afternoon decided to postpone their Sunday night's decision about holding of two suspended honours final semester examinations of English department on May 13 and 14.
The decision following insistence from a group of teachers from other departments under social science faculty has frustrated the English students, who had become happy over realisation of their demand for holding the suspended examinations.
A letter will be sent to the head of the Department of English for postponing the examinations, which were scheduled to be held on May 13 and May 14, Sust Registrar Zamil Ahmed Chowdhury told The Daily Star yesterday afternoon.
An emergency meeting of the Academic Council has been called today and the whole matter would now be decided at the meeting, he added.
English department students of SUST called off their hunger strike at 9:30pm on Sunday as the authorities told the agitating students that the suspended examinations of Honours final semester students will be held on May 13 and 14.
The students had been pressing for their demand for holding the two examinations that has been postponed as per decision of the Academic Council meeting held on May 4.
The English students' three-point demand also included appointment of two permanent professors in English department and creation of Arts Faculty comprising the departments of English and Bangla.
They alleged that social science faculty Dean Dr Khondker had managed postponing the two examinations as there had been serious session jam in two other departments under his faculty.
