Vested quarters were behind incidents, VC says

Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) vice chancellor (VC) Prof Dr M Nawsher Ali yesterday said steps have been taken to stop recurrence of unpleasant situation like Sunday's violence on the campus. The VC said this after holding a meeting of the teachers' council of Kuet. Presided by the VC, the meeting was attended by heads of all department and provosts of all the six residential halls of the university. The VC admitted that a group of vested interest was out to vitiate peaceful academic atmosphere on the campus. The meeting unanimously resolved that necessary steps would be taken against persons involved in Sunday's violence forcing the VC to declare the university closed till May 31 asking resident students to vacate the halls. It was also resolved that steps would also be taken to remove credibility gap between teachers and students. Meanwhile, majority of teachers accused Shimul Das, a student of the Mechanical Department for organising violence on the campus by hiring hoodlums from outside. The VC said that he would go into action after getting report on findings of the seven-member probe committee.
