Allegations against Prof Altaf
During his three and a half years tenure, Rajshashi University vice chancellor Prof Altaf appointment 265 teachers and 150 employees allegedly under political consideration and in violation of university rules, said sources at RU administration.
Prof Altaf played vital role for regularisation of controversially appointed 546 fourth-class employees at the university and his administration spent Tk 2.50 crore in legal battle for the purpose, sources at RU Accounts Section said.
Prof Altaf was widely criticised for recommending promotion of Mian Muhammad Mahiudin, a teacher of geology and mining department, as professor ignoring Planning Committee's decision.
Mian Mahiuddin is one of the alleged masterminds of killing Prof S Taher Ahmed, a senior teacher of geology and mining department, on February 1, 2006 at his campus residence.
Prof Altaf also illegally allowed Islami Chhatra Shibir RU unit president Salehi, a principal accused in Prof Taher murder case, to appear at examinations with only 16 per cent class attendance, which is much below the required percentage.
Prof Altaf appointed his son-in-law Atiqul Islam at the Institute of Business Administration as a lecturer ignoring meritorious candidates, sources said.
Prof Altaf appointed his daughter Sabina Sultana at zoology department and the appointment was made on the day Prof Taher Ahmed was killed.
He appointed his wife Sufia Beg and his brother as university Academic Committee members, sources said, adding that it was done in violation of rules as they are not teachers of the university.
Prof Altaf amended the Business Studies Faculty Ordinance by an executive order allegedly to allow party cadres to appear at examinations.
Sources said, ignoring the Planning Committee decision, persons having one first class or no first class were appointed in Islamic history and culture, computer science, music and dramatics departments, depriving applicants with achievers of four first classes and divisions.
Prof Altaf received criticism from teachers for not taking any initiative for trial of the killers of two prominent RU teachers Prof Muhammad Yunus and Dr S Taher Ahmed.
