Agriculture to get priority in budget
Azizul Islam tells Sylhet pre-budget meet
Finance Adviser Mirza Azizul Islam yesterday agriculture, water resources and building rural infrastructures will be given priority in the ensuing national budget.
Besides, power sector, human resources development, health and education will also get highest possible allocations.
The adviser was addressing the division level pre-budget view exchange meeting with local elite and government officials in Sylhet yesterday afternoon. This was the last such pre-budget meeting at divisional headquarters this year.
About 100 people from four districts of Sylhet division joined the meeting held at the deputy commissioner's conference room. Planning Secretary Zafar Ahmed Chowdhury and NBR Chairman MA Majid also spoke. Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Dr. Zafar Ahmed Khan chaired the meeting.
The adviser said subsidies on food and fertiliser will have to be increased in the next financial year because of rise in their process globally. The government will also encourage power generation in private sector, he added.
The finance adviser said the proposal for setting up of a special economic zone for non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) in Sylhet region is under consideration of the government.
There will be expansion of social safety net through raising allowances for freedom fighters and elderly people. This year, a new programme styled 'employment guarantee scheme' will be launched, he added.
