Ex-BNP MP Habib charge-sheeted for extortion
Investigation authorities yesterday pressed charges against three people including former BNP lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib in an extortion case filed for demanding Tk 30 lakh as toll.
Habib, also Satkhira district BNP president, was elected from Satkhira-1 (Tala-Kalaroa) constituency as a candidate from four-party alliance led by BNP-Jamaat in 2001.
Investigation officer of the case, sub-inspector Farid Hossain of Kalaroa Police Station, submitted the charge sheet to Satkhira Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court.
The other charge-sheeted accused are Kalaroa upazila BNP President Bazlur Rahman and Kalaroa Habibul Islam Habib College Principal Abdul Jabbar.
Md Nurul Islam Biswas of village Jahanabad in Kalaroa upazila lodged the extortion case with Kalaroa Police Station accusing the three people including former BNP lawmaker Habib, court sources said.
On August 10 in 2005, Habib called Nurul Islam at his house and demanded that the latter transfers his 33 decimal land in Kalaroa Pourasava in Habib's name, Nurul Isalm said in the case. As he expressed his unwillingness to do so, Habib demanded Tk 30 lakh as toll and threatened him to kill in case of non-compliance.
On October 10 in 2005, the former lawmaker again called Nurul Islam at his house and forced him into signing a deed to transfer his 33 decimal land in Kalaroa Pourasava in the name of the accused.
Nurul Islam had to do so as the accused threatened him with life, he said, adding that the accused did not pay him the value of the land.
The complainant did not file any case earlier fearing reprisal by the accused as he was a ruling party lawmaker, he said.
Habibul Islam Habib, also charge-sheeted in two other cases including Tala upazila BNP president ABM Altaf Hossain murder case, is now on the run.
He is also in the list of corrupt suspects.
Police on May 5 attached the moveable property from his Kalaroa house.
