Satkhira AL demands trial of war criminals
First meeting of EC held since allowing indoor politics
Leaders of Satkhira district Awami League (AL) in their first district executive committee meeting yesterday demanded the trial of war criminals.
They also raised the demand for release of party chief Sheikh Hasina before government-proposed dialogues with political parties and the parliamentary elections scheduled for December this year.
During the Liberation War in 1971, the rajakars and Al-Badr and Al-Shams men belonging to Jamaat-e-Islami were involved in killing, loot, rape and arson, the AL leaders said at the meeting held at the district AL office at Palashpole in the town.
The criminals also killed the intellectuals, the brave sons of the nation, on December 14 just before the independence of the country, they said.
The AL leaders demanded release of party chief Sheikh Hasina before the government-proposed dialogue and the upcoming election.
District AL leaders urged the central AL leaders not to participate in the government-proposed dialogue and upcoming parliamentary election without party chief Sheikh Hasina.
They stressed the need for launching of a movement to press home their demand for releasing Hasina.
They criticised the Election Commission's announcement for delimitation of five constituencies reducing them to four in Satkhira district.
Terming re-demarcation of constituencies as 'ill-motivated', they demanded retaining five constituencies in the district.
The AL leaders also called for taking effective steps to contain price hike of essentials and introduce rationing system in order to mitigate sufferings of common people.
“We will now put emphasis on our one-point demand -- release of our party chief Sheikh Hasina before dialogue,” said district AL president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who chaired the meeting.
Dr AFM Ruhul Haque, former AL lawmakers Monsur Ahmed, Dr Mokhlesur Rahman and AK Fazlul Haque, Nazrul Islam, M A Ahmed, Firoz Ahmed, Mahidul Haque, Abu Nasim Moina, Asaduzzman, Gazi Lutfor Rahman, Asadul Haque, Nurul Haque, Golam Mostafa addressed the meeting, among others.
