Land subsides again in Barapukuria
About five acres of land at two villages adjacent to Barapukuria Coalmine in Dinajpur has subsided again by two to six inches, second such incident in two weeks.
As some five acres of paddy and habitant land at Kalupara and Balorampur villages subsided with big noise at 10:00pm on Saturday, the whole area shook up and panicked people came out of their houses, residents of the two villages said.
Only a week ago, subsidence in a nearby Boro cropland caused water-logging there and the authorities of Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Ltd (BCMCL) formed a seven-members committee to investigate the incident.
On January 14 this year, the BCMCL started extracting coal from point No 1103, some 500 metres from the subsided area, sources said.
BCMCL officials, however, officially admitted subsidence of about one acre land by one to five inches on Saturday night.
Land subsidence in underground mining is common, they said.
Land subsidence also occurred in the area in May and June of 2006, BCMCL officials said.
