Dropout thwarts schooling in <i>char</i> areas
Speakers tell Mymensingh seminar
Speakers at a seminar yesterday said a staggering 70 per cent children in the char areas of the district drop out at the primary level, indicating a frustrating condition of schooling in the poverty-stricken area.
Shortage of teachers and lack of infrastructures in primary schools hampers education in the char areas, they said at the seminar tiled 'Neglected Education System: Perspective Char Sirta' held at Renaissance Girls' High School at village Char Anandipur in Sadar upazila'.
Quality education remains a far cry for those children, said the speakers.
Mass Line Media Centre (MMC) organised the seminar under 'Raising Voice through Media for the Restoration of Human Rights and Good Governance Project'.
Dropout at primary level is over 33 per cent in the district, speakers said at the seminar.
Sirta Union Parishad Chairman Md Abdul Matin was the chief guest on the occasion with Md Abdul Jabber, president of Grameen Advocacy Centre Sirta of MMC, in the chair.
Md Aminul Islam, The Daily Star Correspondent in Mymensingh, presented the keynote paper at the seminar moderated by MMC district Coordinator Syed Reazul Islam.
An open discussion was also held where union parishad members Jalal Uddin and Aklima Khatun, Alal Uddin, Russel Ahmed, Manik Miah, Nazrul Islam, Imam Hossain Rony, Abdul Halim and Habib Ullah participated, among others.
Over 50 people including local elites and students were present at the seminar.
