Brave Young Turks
Despite the departure of Turkey from the Euro 2008 semis, they have left an indelible mark on European football. Their performance against the full strength German side with a makeshift XI was quite fabulous. If they got some favour from the lady luck, they might have been in the final.
The night vigil to watch the Euro 2008 paid rich dividends. Though it was disrupted by load shedding, we were watching sublime football! We saw the rise & fall of the Dutch, Germany's resurgence, abrupt end of Croatia's dream run, Portuguese woes, Spain's smooth move & a new Russian revolution etc.
But the team that won our hearts is Turkey. The country of Kemal Ataturk, which was once considered the ailing person of Europe, has now established itself as a football superpower. How could we forget those thrilling matches where they came back astonishingly & put the opponents in despair. The stubbornness that makes them successful is quite laudable. We called Cameroon the indomitable Lion but the real indomitable team is Turkey.
The beautiful game came with all its glamour this time around.
