Let there be an end...

Outrageous. What happened on the streets as Tarique fell in the bathroom cannot be condoned in any way. I wonder what will these goons called 'chhatra' do if Tarique is convicted and imprisoned or dies a natural death!! Are they going to kill everyone in sight and burn everything they can? I wish I could express my anger without any restriction at the way public properties and killing of people took place in the name of so called 'gonotantrik andolon'. May I ask, is Tarique Rahman's life more precious than the life of the person killed--don't call it an accident-- by the goons of the JCD? What is Tarique's contribution--as prime minister's son-- to our society, economy or country? What has Tarique done to bring change to our impoverished society? What has Tarique done to uplift the image of the country? The man who died for nothing at least contributed to the economy as a businessperson by earning his livelihood through hard work. But allegations are that Tarique only nurtured a group of cadres. If these and other allegations against Tarique are true, then I would not feel a fig of sympathy for him even if he is convicted and imprisoned. Tarique is not even a politician but a so called 'businessman' in his own words. It's time to call a spade a spade. Let there be no place for corrupt people--- whoever they are-- in society. We must introduce the capital punishment for corruption beyond a certain limit and for certain level of people. Those who proclaim to be our leaders should also be ready to face the consequences if they fail. We want a clean society for our future generation. Will our intelligentsia dare show us the way?

Campus violence is a very familiar thing to the public university students. It is a threat to the general students who are not violent. Some so-called student leaders are responsible for campus violence and this hampers the normal activities in a university. Some powerful leaders/teachers in our country instigate the students to achieve their own political targets. They are quite disinclined to recognise the horrible effect of campus violence because their sons/daughters are studying abroad. So, as a student of a public university, I hope all, including the leaders/teachers, students, will work together to end campus violence. Syed Russel, BBA, Dept. of Business Administration, SUST

The outrageous behaviour of the so-called students of Dhaka University on August 25, 2008 makes me feel ashamed of the fact that I was a student of this institution once. I don't know whether they were common students or worthless sycophants of the BNP or both, their way of protest is simply unacceptable. Tarique Rahman's slipping down on the bathroom floor is definitely a sad incident; however, it does not justify killing an innocent passer-by. These people are simply killers and they should be brought to justice. Again, the need to ban student politics is obvious. Rifat Mahbub, Edinburgh, UK

Suddenly, in the evening of 25 Aug, we were caught on a news headline, in all private tv channels-- an imprisoned leader fell in the bathroom and was wounded. This news immediately spread like wildfire. The repercussions were vandalism on the streets, breaking of vehicles and disruption of normal life. The supporters of this leader set fire to a CNG -run car, the gas cylinder of which exploded and one person was dead instantly. The newspapers did not get give much coverage to the dead because the dead is "one person" and nothing else. Even the person's name was not mentioned in any newspaper because he was not a leader. Many such persons are lucky that only one of them was dead and not many. In this situation if the dead would have been many dozens, even then no one would have cared to mention about them because they are commoners and it is their duty to sacrifice lives for such leaders as they have been sacrificing all along in this country. The generous newspapers published the picture of the leader's wife crying to see the bandage on the forehead of that great leader. The newspapers did not even have the time to see the wife of that deceased "one person'" who died for no fault of his. We hear that the government has submitted cases against some people. The government submitted similar cases in the past against some students in the same situation and ultimately had to withdraw the charges against them. We believe the cases will face the same fate. The leader who fell in the bathroom is under arrest for corruption. My question is how the news of his fall in the bathroom spread as he is in custody, how did the picture of the bandaged forehead reached the newspaper offices so quickly? We have the answer, because he is our leader. What would have happened if he would have fallen in his home's bathroom? The incidents indicate that we are going back to the pre-one-eleven days and we are very much scared as the election is nearing and these leaders are coming back. The CTG gave us hope but that hope is fading away. Shafiqul Islam, On e-mail
