Population boom
The population of the major cities and towns of Bangladesh is increasing at an alarming rate. It has been estimated that if the present pace continues, then 80% of the total population will live in the urban areas by 2025.
The population of Dhaka city has already reached 1.8 crore, creating various problems. The open spaces, wetlands and vegetated areas are already filled up due to pressure of population. This extra population creates various socio-environmental problems such as air pollution, contamination of surface and ground water and other environmental degradation.
Mainly rural people migrate to the cities in search of livelihood. Installation of local and rural based employment facilities may eliminate these problems.
