AL demands party candidate as JP 'loses' vote bank
The grassroots leaders and activists of Awami League (AL) in Tangail-5 (Sadar) constituency have demanded nomination of a party candidate in the constituency for December 18 parliamentary election. The made the demand saying that the Jatiya Party (Ershad) candidate has lost his vote bank after the new delimitation of the JS seat that had been 'reserved' for JP leader Abul Kashem as possible partner of the AL-led grand alliance, party sources said. Tangail-5 constituency comprised Tangail Sadar and Delduar upazilas before the new delimitation. But the new delimitation excluded Delduar upazila from Tangail-5 and added it with Tangail-6 (Nagarpur) constituency. Delduar upazila is considered as a vote bank of JP Presidium Member Mohammad Abul Kashem, who hails from the upazila. Abul Kashem became the fourth position holder in 2001 election getting a total of 50,266 votes from the two upazilas -- 21,301 of the votes come from Delduar upazila while 28,965 votes came from Sadar upazila, Election Commission sources said. BNP's Maj Gen (rtd) Mahmudul Hassan won the election getting 96,544 votes from the two upazilas -- 23,474 from Delduar and 73,070 from Sadar upazila. AL presidium member Abdul Mannan, who got the second position in the election getting 83,458 votes from the two upazilas, died in 2005. He got 83,458 votes -- 22,312 from Delduar and 61,146 from Sadar upazila. Krishak Shramik Janata League candidate Murad Siddiqui ran as third position in the election with 68,167 votes -- 16,093 votes from Delduar and 52,074 from Sadar upazila. District AL influential leader ex-banker Atoar Rahman Khan and district AL science and technology secretary Sanwar Hossain have already started communication with the grassroots party men as well as the voters as preparation for the contesting the election. However, JP men in Tangail expressed their confidence about Abul Kashem's getting the AL-led grand alliance ticket in the constituency.
