Grassroots leaders of Awami League of Biral and Bochaganj upazila of Dinajpur blocked Dinajpur-Bochaganj highway for hours yesterday demanding nomination of Shatish Chandra Roy from Dinajpur-2 instead of Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and threatened to resign from their party for non-compliance. Roy won from the seat four times since 1979. Several thousand party men from 16 unions in the constituency also held a protest rally at Mongalpur Bazaar in Biral violating emergency protesting the party high command's decision. At the rally, speakers said Khalid Mahmud is an employee of Shudhashadhan and is isolated from party workers and people. He leads a party faction only to get ticket and creates confusion among local party men. The rally declared Khalid Mahmud unwanted in Dinajpur-2, saying he joined hands with rival party and his men worked against AL in 2001 polls.
