AL offices locked at Jhenidah, Moheshpur

Anrgy leaders and activists of Awami league (AL) and its front organizations in Jhenidah yesterday staged demoinstrations and locked the patry's district office and its Moheshpur upazila office protesting nomination for Jhenidah 2 and Jhenidah-3 constituencies. Police interved to quell the violence and arrested five activists from in front of the district office. Police have been deployed there to stave off further violence, Jhenidah Sadar police station OC said. As the news of niomination spread, hundreds of party men gathered in front of the AL offices at the district headquarters and at Moheshpur at around noon. They held spontaneousa rallies in front of party offices demanding change in the nominations. Those nominated are fair werather birds, who do not have contacvt with grassroots party mena nd peoeple, speakers said at the rallies. They rejected Awami League nomination of Shafikul Islam Apu in Jhenidah-2 and demanded ticket for Nur-e-Alam Siddique or Saidul Karim Mintu. They also demanded ticket for Jumma Chaoudhary or Shafikul Azam Chansal instead of Principal Nabi Newas in Jhenidah-3. Tension mounted in the AL rank and file in the district following the nominations. Contacted, Shafikul Azam Chansal, nomination aspirant for Jhenidah-3, said he has been closely associated with party men in the area for long. Principal Nabi Newas is an outsider as he a resident of Kadbila village in Chowgacha upazila in Jessore district. Besides, he has no contact with local party men, he claimed.
