Tickets to new faces frustrate Tangail AL
Baten to run as an independent candidate

Nomination of new faces in three seats created a sharp reaction among party men. Three senior leaders who last the last polls with small margins have been left out. Dr Motiur Rahman Chowdhury got ticket for Tangail-3 (Ghatail) instead of veteran leader Shamsur Rahman Khan Shajahan. Leaders and activists of Ghatail AL at a meeting yesterday threaten of mass resignation if the party high command does not vchange the decision. "We are forcing our leader (Shajahan) to contest as an independent candidate," one of his followers told the Daily Star yesterday. In Tangail-6 (Nagarpur-Delduar), nomination went to Ahsanul Islam Titu instead of senior AL leader and freedom fighter Khandakar Abdul Baten. Baten has already started taking preparations to contest as an independent candidate. They said Baten has reputation as an honest leader and he was defeated in the last election with only 1,878 votes when rebel AL candidate Golam Mohammad Khan Tareque sliced away 16,462 votes as an independent candidate. This time Baten has a fair chance to win, they claimed. In Tangail-5 (Sadar), Jubo League central leader Mamunur Rashid got the AL ticket instead of influential leader Atoar Rahman Khan, which surprised all.
