Jamaat leader assaulted at Gopalganj college
Agitated students of Gopalganj Government Bangabandhu College have assaulted the district ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, Ajmal Hossain, protesting his presence at the college where politics of Jamaat is prohibited, college sources said.
The incident occurred yesterday when Ajmal, also principal of local MH Khan College came to the college to open the Inter-District Sports Competition as chief guest.
Students tored the punjabi of the Jamaat leader and assaulted him. They also ransacked the chairs and tables on the dais foiling the function.
Police arrested former general secretary of the college students' union, Ibrahim Khalil, who was being interrogated at Sadar Police Station till filing of the report yesterday afternoon.
Denying his involvement in the incident, Khalil said the incident occurred as no student or any student organisation accepted easily the invitation of Jamaat leader at the college function as the chief guest. This is because the politics of Jamaat is prohibited in the college, he said.
Bangabandhu college vice principal MA Hye who was presiding the function held outsiders responsible for the incident. Ajmal was invited at the function principal of MH College, not as Jamaat ameer, he said. After the incident, teachers' council held an emergency meeting from where the matter was informed to the district administration and superintendent of police.
When contacted, Gopalganj Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Asheque Suja Mamun confirmed arrest of former students union leader Ibrahim Khalil.
However, the college authorities did not file any case or lodged any complaint in this regard.
