BNP leader 'defects', AL nominee 'unwanted' in Jhenidah-2

In a dramatic move after failing to get BNP nomination from Jhenidah-2, BNP leader Naser Sahriar Jahedi Mohul announced his intention to join Awami League (AL). At a press conference held at his office on Wednesday night, he said a large number of BNP leaders and activists would follow him. Meanwhile, AL leaders and activists, at another press conference held here the same night declared party-nominated candidate Shafiqul Islam Apu (Jhenidah-2) unwanted. Pourasabha AL president Dr Azizur Rahman, district Sramik league general secretary Ekramul Haq, district Jubo League president Naser Alam Siddique Uzzal, district Swechhasebok League convener Ahadur Rahman, AL leader Khaleda Khanam, district Chhatra League president Ashfak Mahmud John and secretary Atikul Hasan Masum were present at the press conference. AL nominated Apu discarding the name of prominent party leader Nur-e-Alam Siddiquee sent by the grassroots leaders to party central office in Dhaka on November 9. Grass roots activists said AL will lose the seat if the nomination is not changed.
