BNP wants alliance ticket in all 6 seats in Sirajganj, Jamaat firm on two
Local BNP demands four-party alliance ticket all six seats in Sirajganj while Jamaat-e-Islami, a key partner of the BNP-led alliance, is serious about getting tickets for two seats in the district.
As Jamaat wants nomination from Sirajganj-4 (Ullapara) and Sirajganj-5 (Belkuchi-Chowhali) constituencies, a rift has been created between local BNP and Jamaat.
Earlier, there were seven constituencies in the district but the new delimitation has reduced the number into six. Chowhali upazila was under Sirajganj-6 constituency and Belcuchi-Kamarkhanda was under Sirajganj-5 constituency but now Sirajganj-5 constituency comprises Chowhali and Belkuchi upazilas while Kamarkhanda upazila has gone under Sirajganj-2.
In 2001, Major (retd) Monzur Quader and Justice Mozammel Huq won in Sirajganj-6 and Sirajganj-5 as four-party alliance candidates.
Now BNP demands nomination for Quader or Huq from the Sirajganj-5 constituency, while Jamaat demands the seat for Sirajganj district Jamaat Amir Ali Alam.
Jamaat demands nomination from Sirajganj-4 constituency for Rafiqul Islam, Amir of Dhaka Mohanagor Jamaat, while BNP demands ticket from the constituency for M Akbar Ali who won the seat in 2001 election.
Jamaat leaders said Akbar has lost his popularity due to his huge corruption during the last regime.
Meanwhile, Jamaat leaders Ali Alam and Rafiqul Islam and BNP leaders Quader, Mozammel and Akbar have started mass contract separately in their electoral areas for nomination.
