JP leader Jhantu violates polls code

Jatiya Party (Ershad) central leader Aminul Islam Jhantu, also a nomination seeker from Sirajganj-2 constituency, yesterday violated electoral code of conduct by organising a big rally with motorcycles, cars, microbuses and a mini-truck here as part of a showdown. Jhantu went to a highway restaurant at Hatikumrul with his supporters to receive party chief Hussain Mohammad Ershad who was returning Dhaka from Rangpur on conclusion of his electoral work. Meanwhile, a JP activist named Eshaque Ali, 30, son of Saman Kari of Raghurgati village in Sirajganj Sadar upazila died on the way as a speeding bus hit his motorcycle from behind at Hatikumrul on the highway. Another JP activist was also injured who was admitted to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital in a critical condition. When contacted, district election commissioner Nitish Chandra Dey said Jhantu had violated electoral code of conduct and action would be taken against him.
