Containing violence

S.A. Mansoor, Dhaka
This government has come to power through securing an unprecedented mandate and the trust of the people. It should therefore take strong and positive steps to root out campus violence at universities and other educational institutions without fear or favour and without any party bias. The ugly head of violence in educational institutions has reached epidemic forms in Jahangirnagar, Chittagong and Rajshahi Universities. This cannot be overlooked. The violence must be contained with strong hands, and cannot be allowed to continue any further. If the government cannot bring tranquillity in the education sector, then how can it contain price hike, terrorism and other crimes, many of which have both internal and external links? It is essential that we put our house in order by freeing the education sector from violence which has become an everyday affair. If this is not done soon, the people will lose confidence in the present AL-led government. It too may well face a debacle similar to the one that brought down the BNP and Jamaat at the next election. I am sure the government realises that pre-warned is pre-armed. Let this bad situation linger no further.
