Bridge and electricity

O H Kabir, Dhaka
We feel proud and happy that at last our present government led by Sheikh Hasina has taken in hand the construction of the mammoth Padma bridge which is expected to be completed by the year 2011. After more than three decades of our hard earned independence, we built the most essential Jamuna Bridge. We feel that if we could wait for more than three decades for completion of the Jamuna Bridge we may wait for at least 5-6 years for construction of the Padma bridge for various reasons. The most important reason is our acute shortage of electricity supply and frequent load shedding. We may live 'as it is, where it is' without the Padma bridge for the next few years, but we cannot survive without electricity any more. Our economy, industry, mills and garment factories, trade and commerce, foreign investment, works and functions in govt offices, private firms and establishments and our children's education are being obstructed by regular load shedding. We would request the government to defer construction of Padma Bridge by a few years, divert the Padma bridge funds to improve, develop and increase our electricity supply and to rescue our country from an impending disaster. We should step forward very carefully and cautiously considering the global economic recession.
