3 madrasa students drown while bathing in river in Narsingdi

Three female madrasa students drowned after being swept away by a strong current while bathing in a river in Narsingdi's Raipura upazila yesterday.

Three other children who were with them were rescued and taken to hospital.

The incident occurred around noon in the Kakon river at Borokanda village under Chanderkandi union.

The deceased were identified as Tabia, 13, daughter of Shamim Mia, and Ayesha, 9, and Jannat, 9, daughters of two different men named Rubel Mia.

All were residents of Borokanda village and students of the local Gausia Noor-e-Madina Women's Madrasa.

According to police and local sources, the six children went to bathe in the Kakon river, a distributary of the Meghna, near their homes when they were caught in a strong current.

Hearing their cries for help, locals rushed to the spot, rescued the children and took them to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared Tabia, Ayesha and Jannat dead.

The identities of the three other children could not be immediately known.

Md Mujibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Raipura Police Station, confirmed the incident to The Daily Star.

"We are looking into the incident," the OC said.
