Five killed as bus ploughs into crowd collecting eggs after truck overturns
At least five people were killed and seven others injured after a passenger bus ran over a crowd who had gathered to collect eggs from an overturned truck on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur this evening.
The accident happened around 6:30pm at the Soyadi bus stand area under Algi union, according to police and locals.
Helal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Bhanga Highway Police Station, confirmed the casualty figures.
Locals said an egg-laden truck travelling from Dhaka to Khulna suffered a tyre blowout and overturned on the highway, spilling its load across the road. As nearby residents gathered to collect the scattered eggs, a Narail Express bus travelling from Dhaka to Narail ran over the crowd.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Bhanga, Faridpur and Dhaka. Several of them were reported to be in critical condition, locals said.
The deceased included the truck driver, Zainal, 27, and two local residents, Arif, 27, and Obaidur, 40. The identities of the other two victims could not be confirmed immediately.
Except for the truck driver, all the victims were residents of Soyadi and nearby areas, locals said.
Following the crash, locals set fire to at least six vehicles and blocked the highway, disrupting traffic in both directions.
OC Helal said police were working to identify all the victims and restore normal traffic.
