A pedestrian was killed this morning after being hit by a gas cylinder-laden pick-up van in Nizampur Bridge area of Mirsarai upazila in Chattogram.

The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahman, 42, of South Oli Nagar in the upazila.

Quoting witnesses, Zakir Rabbani, officer-in-charge of Kumira Highway Police Station, said the accident occurred around 8:30am when a Chattogram-bound pick-up van from Dhaka lost control and crashed into a roadside island. Abdur Rahman, who was standing on the island at the time, was critically injured, the police officer said.

Locals rescued him and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead on arrival, the OC said.

Highway police seized the van at the scene, but the driver and his assistant fled immediately. Police are working to identify and apprehend the absconding duo, and legal proceedings are underway.
