Mob beats robbery suspect, severs wrist in Tongi: Police

Say the suspect faces 10 criminal cases

A 32-year-old robbery suspect had his wrist cut off allegedly by a mob in Tongi, Gazipur yesterday.

The suspected robber, Main Uddin, leaves in a rented house in Ershadnagar. He is accused in 10 cases, including eight for robbery and two for drugs, according to the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tongi West Police Station, Md Arifur Rahman

The incident occurred last night in the Sataish area.

Eyewitnesses said Main Uddin and two accomplices attacked a passerby in an attempted robbery. The seriously injured victim managed to catch one of the muggers, Main Uddin, and call for help, prompting locals to intervene.

Locals reportedly beat him severely, at one point severing his wrist.

Police later arrived at the scene and taken Main Uddin in custody. He was later sent to Dhaka for treatment.

OC Arifur Rahman said that part of the suspect’s wrist had already been injured before locals completely severed it.

Legal action has been taken in connection with the incident, said the police officer.
