Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen invited Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to visit China and conveyed warm congratulations and greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

The envoy extended the invitation during a call on the prime minister at his Cabinet Division office at 12:30pm today, said PM’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir while briefing journalists at the Secretariat after the meeting.

Replying to a question, he said that the tour schedule was not discussed during the meeting.

“The prime minister currently has many important domestic priorities. Once he begins his foreign tours after completing these domestic tasks, this invitation from China will be considered with great importance,” Humayun added.

The adviser said the Chinese government has recognised the overwhelming mandate that the newly elected prime minister received, winning a two-thirds majority.

“The Chinese ambassador’s visit was primarily to congratulate the new government, formed through the spontaneous participation of the people of Bangladesh in the election,” Humayun added.

Stating that the relationship between Bangladesh and China is historical, he said, “This strong relationship began during the tenure of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. Over the years, China has been a very important and reliable development partner for Bangladesh.”

Commenting on recent cooperation, Humayun said the current government intends to build further on the development work achieved between Bangladesh and China in recent years.

Noting that today’s meeting was a courtesy call, he said no specific issues were discussed.

“However, both sides made courteous commitments on advancing bilateral relations to a new height and further strengthening development activities while protecting the interests of the people of both countries,” Humayun added.
