Bangabandhu initiated interest-free microcredit: State minister Khasru

State Minister for Social Welfare, Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru, today said Bangabandhu was the first head of the government who introduced interest-free microcredit distribution programme in the country for improving the living conditions of the common people.

He said, following the footsteps of Bangabandhu, the incumbent government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina continued the programme of providing interest-free loans among the unprivileged grassroots level people.

Khasru said this while giving out bank cheques for interest-free loans among disadvantaged people and stipend money to underprivileged meritorious students at the Netrakona Public Hall.

The Ministry of Social Welfare in cooperation with Netrakona Sadar upazila parishad distributed the bank cheques for interest-free loans amounting to Tk 69 lakh among 235 poor people and the bank cheques for stipend money amounting to Tk 16 lakh to 106 poor students.

Chaired by Chairman of Netrakona Sadar upazila parishad, Tafsiruddin Khan, the bank cheque distribution ceremony was addressed, among others, by Chairman of Netrakona Zila Parishad Prasanta Kumar Ray, Additional District Magistrate Suhel Mahmud, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mahmuda Akter and Deputy Director of Social Service Department Mohammad Alaluddin.

The function was conducted by Netrakona Sadar upazila Social Service Officer, Abdullah-AL-Mamun.
