Barishal-4 AL candidate Shammi can't contest polls as SC rejects petition

The Supreme Court today affirmed a High Court order that upheld the Election Commission's decision to cancel the nomination paper of Awami League-nominated candidate Shammi Ahmed due to her dual citizenships.

Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division of the SC Justice M Enayetur Rahim passed no order on a petition filed by Shammi Ahmed seeking stay on the HC order.

Shammi Ahmed had filed the nomination paper for contesting as candidate from Awami League ticket from Barishal-4 in the upcoming January 7 parliamentary election.

Yesterday, the HC bench of Justice Md Iqbal Kabir Lytton and Justice SM Maniruzzaman rejected a writ petition filed by Shammi Ahmed challenging the EC's decision.

Md Momtaz Uddin Fakir, Mohammad Sayed Ahmed Raza and Shah Monjurul Hoque appeared for Shammi Ahmed, while Mahbub Shafique argued for independent candidate Pankaj Nath, who challenged the candidacy of Shammi Ahmed with the EC over her dual citizenships, before the Apex court chamber judge during hearing of the petition today.
