The Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) today fined two super shops Tk 19 lakh for using designated parking spaces for commercial activities instead of keeping them available for vehicles.

A mobile court led by CDA's Special Metropolitan Magistrate Hamimun Tanjin conducted the drive at “Utshab” and “Shwapno” super shops on Agrabad Access Road in the port city.

Abul Hasnat, public relations officer of CDA, said Utshab was fined Tk 8 lakh, while Shwapno and the owner of the building housing the outlet were fined Tk 11 lakh in total.

In addition, Tk 22 lakh in fines was imposed on the owners of 13 buildings for violating their approved designs, said CDA authorised officer Tanzib Hossain.

“Five buildings and a restaurant were sealed for failing to comply with the designs approved by CDA,” he said.

CDA Chairman Belayet Hossain said the growing use of designated parking spaces for other purposes was contributing to worsening traffic congestion and public suffering in the city.

He said CDA had already conducted drives at hospitals after finding that many of them lacked adequate parking facilities and instructed their authorities to arrange parking spaces quickly.
