Indian Border Security Force (BSF) allegedly fired shots and detained a Bangladeshi national from the Roumari border in Kurigram last night.

The incident took place at the Khatiamari border area of Roumari Sadar union around 2:30am, said Shafiqul Islam, ward-4 member of the union.

The detainee was identified as Mistar Ali, 25, of Ratanpur village in the union, he said.

Shafiqul added that a group of smugglers was trying to smuggle various goods from India into Bangladesh late last night. “At that time, BSF members fired shots and threw cocktails, creating panic among them, and took away Mistar.”

Lt Col Md Hasanuzzaman, commanding officer of Jamalpur 35 BGB Battalion, said, “We have learned about the incident through various sources. We have contacted the BSF to inquire about the matter, but no official response has been received from them yet.”
