A defamation case has been filed against Amir Hamza, Jamaat-e-Islami’s candidate for the Kushtia-3 constituency.

Mehdi Hasan Jillu, a member of the convening committee of Jashore District Krishak Dal, filed the case with a Jashore court on Wednesday.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Asadul Islam ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation, Jashore, to probe the allegation and submit a report, said the plaintiff’s lawyer, MA Gafur.

According to the complaint, Hamza made defamatory remarks about Arafat Rahman Koko, the younger son of late prime minister Khaleda Zia, during a religious gathering in Chattogram in 2023.

The complainant said the remarks tarnished Koko’s dignity, harmed the honour of the Zia family and led to public ridicule.

Jillu said he came across a video of the speech online on January 17 and was deeply distressed. Claiming defamation amounting to Tk 500 crore, he sought legal redress.
