Harmful blare of music

Deendayal M. Lulla, Mumbai, India
This refers to the article “Protect your hearing from noise” (Nov 3). Outside noise pollution which is thrust on you during festivals is harmful for ears. In India, noise pollution is at a very high level—more than 100 decibels during festivals like Ganpati, Navratri and Diwali when crackers are burst. At the time of immersion of idols, people dance on the roads and Bollywood music and English songs are played on music systems carried on trucks, which can be heard even from a faraway distance. Those interested in loud music can very well put on cordless headphones, but it is not done. Music is thrust on nearby residents of buildings which is not wanted by them. One should think of senior citizens and children whose ear drums are very delicate. One can protect ears from loud music by installing sound-proof walls in homes and it is the only option left if one can afford it. Radio stations have sound-proof rooms.
