Chhatra Dal leader among two arrested over shooting at BNP leader’s home in Demra

Police have arrested two people, including the convener of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s Demra thana unit, and recovered three firearms, two magazines and 13 rounds of ammunition in separate drives in Dhaka’s Demra and Narayanganj’s Rupganj.

The arrests and recoveries came during an investigation into a recent shooting at the residence of SM Reza Chowdhury Selim, convenor of the Demra thana BNP unit.

The arrestees were identified as Masud Rana, 35, convenor of the JCD Demra thana unit, and Taposh, 38.

Mallik Ahasan Uddin Sami, deputy commissioner of DMP’s Wari division, confirmed the development to The Daily Star, adding that a case was filed over the shooting at Selim’s residence.

During the investigation, police traced Taposh’s involvement using technology and arrested him from the slope of Sultana Kamal Bridge in Demra early today, the DC said.

Based on information obtained from Taposh during interrogation, police later raided a house in Barabo area of Rupganj and arrested Masud in connection with the case.

Police recovered an old single-barrel shotgun and eight rounds of cartridges from an abandoned room of the house, Mallik said.

Later, acting on information provided by Taposh and Masud, police raided Taposh’s rented house in Barabo and recovered two pistols, two magazines and five rounds of ammunition from a sunshade of a room.

The DC said police confirmed that the recovered firearms had been used in the shooting at Selim’s residence.

On Friday, eight to nine helmet-wearing people arrived at Selim’s residence at dawn and opened fire at his house. Selim later filed a case against eight unnamed people.

With the latest arrests, three people have so far been arrested in connection with the shooting, the DC said.

Police are also preparing to file a separate case under the Arms Act over the recovery of the firearms and ammunition, he added.
