Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish's Dhaka metropolitan unit today staged a protest rally in front of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, alleging repression of Muslims in India, particularly in West Bengal and Assam.

The programme, held under the banner "Protest rally and march against Muslim repression in West Bengal, Assam and across India", began after Asr prayers.

Protesters later brought out a procession that ended in Bijoynagar area.

Addressing the rally, speakers criticised the Indian government over "ongoing attacks on Muslims" following legislative elections held in some Indian states in May.

They also criticised the Bangladeshi government for its "inaction" over the incidents and called on it to summon the Indian envoy in protest.

"We call on the media to present the truth about what is happening in India. Bangladeshi government is staying quiet over the issue. This is the time for our media to play an effective role," said Anwar Hossain Razi, president of the party's Dhaka north metropolitan unit.
