Here are some comments that came in response to Tuesday's The Daily Star news report headlined “Country set to go into a tailspin” Shat Shamim We, the citizens, have become tired of these continuous hartals. We need to get rid of these shutdowns. Politicians, please, stop playing with the lives of people. Hartals can bring out nothing. It only causes destructions and take away the earning opportunities of low income people. Chandro If shutdowns can hamper the interests of the politicians (such as- if their lives become vulnerable due to hartal risks or if their cars and properties are burnt down like the ordinary people's), then they will be able to understand the pain and may refrain themselves from calling on hartals. M Shafiqula The present PM in her earlier term had promised not to resort to hartal though she forgot her pledge and carried out record number of hartals to paralyse the country for pressing home her political agenda as an opposition leader. Hartal, no doubt, causes death and destruction. The present impasse however, was created by the ruling government through premature scrapping of the caretaker government system. The politics here hardly bears democratic values and the parties are engaged in the worst kind of bickering. We are really sick of these and the nation is in dire need of a respite. Reaz Hassan Hartal is certainly destructive to national economy. It affects not only the manufacturing industries and trade, shops and establishments, the daily wage earners, the movement of transports but also the students in the educational institutions and brings in much hardship in the everyday business life. But the truth of the matter is that alternative avenues of political dispute resolution must remain open so that people are able to cast their vote in a free, fair and credible manner with the participation of all the stakeholders in the next general election. This requires honest endeavour, especially on the part of the ruling party, but the same is not visible. They appear absolutely adamant to hold the elections in the new set-up under the amended constitution. S M Iftekhar Ahmed Looking at the situation, it would be easy to conclude that democracy is a joke in Bangladesh where the stubborn politicians only care for their selfish causes at the expense of the lives of the people. It is also sad to see that business bodies continue to 'urge' politicians instead of taking action against them for ruining their businesses. One can only doubt the civility of the politicians and the seriousness of the business community under such circumstances. ***** Here are some comments that came in response to Tuesday's The Daily Star news report headlined “Blame it on media” Ani People of Bangladesh are not fools. Thanks to the media for informing the people about what these politicians are saying or doing. Both the ruling party and the opposition have been proved inefficient in playing their appropriate roles to run the country. They can only blame themselves for their downfall. Altas Hossain The Daily Star reported it correctly. I heard her speech telecast by TV channels. What Daily Star and other newspapers reported was exactly what Begum Zia has said. So, Fakhrul and his party men are wrongly blaming the media. This is nothing new for our political leaders.
